WHO Raises Alert Over Critical Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Less than 10% of patients that would benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy are able to get them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its initial recommendations on the therapies.

Considering over a billion individuals worldwide now obese, it is urging broader and more equitable access to this class of drugs.

Based on forecasts, over two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that obesity is a long-term condition that can be managed with thorough and ongoing care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are major obstacles to broad availability to the treatments that can help people shift substantial weight, explains the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Shortage

Despite the present most optimistic case, the production of these medications could only cover about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, per the health organization.

The advice urges countries and companies to widen access, through approaches like patent sharing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Function

The injections imitate a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so people reduce food intake.

Patients commonly see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the once-weekly jabs.

Research suggests patients may see weight return within a year of stopping the medication, when their usual hunger return.

To be above a healthy weight raises your chance for experiencing diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Obesity concerns individuals in countries worldwide and was linked to 3.7 million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the WHO.
